Antique Moki Serape Rug - A1570

Navajo hand woven Serape woven in the late 1800's. Although Navajo's did not originally know how to weave and were taught by their predecessors the Pueblo tribes. Serapes were woven tight and dense in texture so that it would hold water and was highly prized for protection against the rain. This particular rug is woven with raveled american flannel which is the white and bright orange. The light green in the center is a mixture of rabbit brush over indigo. Indigo was also a raw material which was imported and that is the blue. Indigo was a long lasting dye that created an array of colors from pale blue to a black tone. 45" x 69".
