C654 - ANTIQUE SIOUX PIPE BAG

C654 - ANTIQUE SIOUX PIPE BAG
One of a kind American Indian antique pipe bag. This Sioux pipe bag is made of native tanned buckskin. The rawhide or parfleche quilled slats are sewn to the bottom of the buckskin. It has a buckskin fringe swen to the bottom of the quilled slats. There are two buckskin strips wrapped with red porcupine quills leaving intervals of undecorated buckskin between them and they are doubled and tied near the center to create a small hoop, they are attached at the top center of the bag, about 1 1/2 inches from the edge as a decorative hanger. Tin cone decoration are attached to the loose ends. The front of the bag has a short rectangular beaded panel done in the "lazy stitch" technique at the lower quarter with two beaded "feather" designs of light blue, cobalt blue, and greasy yellow extending upward into the undecorated buckskin. The design field is medium blue with a center diamond of greasy yellow with a rose window outlined in cobalt blue. The diamond is outlined in cobalt blue with two triangle appendages at either side. The motif is repeated above and below the center diamond with a half diamond or triangle in greasy yellow with a white window outlined in red white-hearts. The triangles are also outlined in colbalt blue. Four crosses of red white-hearts with rose centers fill the empty field in each of the four corners. The panel on the back shows a design of four stepped triangles or tipis that mirror each other horizontally. The tipi centers are of translucent blue surrounded by greasy yellow and outlined in red white-hearts. Three box designs fill the empty design field, each of a colbalt blue rectangle, separated in the middle with rose filling the centers. Two beaded "feather" designs also extend upward into the undecorated buckskin on this side in white, cobalt blue, and greasy yellow. Curiously, the tip of the right feather is incomplete and appears to be so intentionally. Some accounts write of Sioux beadworkers making intentional errors in their work to avoid the presumption of perfection. The sides of the bag are beaded to the edge in medium blue bands that terminate in cobalt blue boxes with either red white-hearts or greay yellow centers. The bands are separated by fields of white or greasy yellow. The top edge of the bag is beaded as well in a light blue band interrupted at regular intervals by either white edged in cobalt blue, greasy yellow edged in red white-hearts, or greasy yellow edged in cobalt blue. A slatted panel is quill wrapped with flattened, dyed porcupine quills creating a design of two vertically rectangular boxes of green with yellow centers against a red field. The quilled slats show an approximate quill loss of 2 %. The fringe at the bottom is supple. The complete bag is approximately 29 inches long including the 10 inches of fringe at the bottom. The bag measures approximately 4 1/2 inches at it's widest point.
