CROW BEADED AND FRINGED TIPI BAG - AW682
View Details
Crow Tipi Bag CA 1880 Sinew sewn Crow tipi bag of thick Native tanned hide folded in half and sewn up the sides. The hair of the hide was left intact inside on the back panel. The top of the front panel is scalloped, an interesting touch that adds character to the bag when the pouch flap is open. The pouch flap was sewn separately onto the bag. Four buckskin thongs are punched through the flap with an awl and tied in loops underneath. Four additional thongs were originally punched through the front lip of the bag which tie to the loops on the flap to hold the bag closed. Eight vertical rows of very long buckskin fringe are attached at either side of the bag also being punched through. Nine rows of beading alternate vertically across the front of the bag giving the design a vertical sense as well as a horizontal one. Down the center vertically are wide, light blue bars with the last bar in rose. All are terminated in dark blue. Flanking the center are bars alternating vertically; two greasy yellow terminating in red white-hearts and two red white-hearts terminating in white. The bars on the outer edges are all done in rose with inner terminals of dark blue and outer terminals of translucent blue. The seam sides are beaded with a single vertical bar of red white-hearts in the center, two shorter light blue bars at top and bottom that terminate in red white-hearts. The center red bar is flanked by two bars of white that terminate in light blue. The single bar edging the top flap has a rose center with white terminals, then flanked at either side by light green with red white-heart terminals on the inside and dark blue terminals on the outside. The outer flanking bars are of light blue with a double terminal of red white-hearts and white on the right. The left terminates in white only. The bars on the side edge of the flap are in dark orange broken in the center, terminated with dark blue and finished on the front edge only in light green. The left loop on the front pouch is torn through and missing. Four of the long fringes on the left are broken and missing. One is broken but shows a Native repair with cotton thread. Two of the long fringes on the right are broken and missing. A very small area of the orange beads at the top right of the flap have some substance (spackle?) stuck to them which I did not attempt to remove. The pouch is 7 1/4 inches tall and 11 1/2 inches wide. The long fringe extends from the bottom of the bag to 31 inches.
