D256 - Antique San Ildefonso Pottery
View Details
This is a handmade Native American pot and is a one of a kind item. This plate was created by Maria Martinez who is from the San Ildefonso tribe. Arguably the most famous potter that ever lived, Maria Martinez learned the art of pottery making from her aunt. Inspired by ancient pottery shards left behind by her ancestors, Maria and her husband revived lost techniques to create some of the finest pueblo pottery ever made. Known the world over for the "gunmetal" finish she achieved with her blackware by her polishing techniques she rose to a status and acclaim never before nor since achieved by any Pueblo potter. With her husband Juan, who created all the painted designs until his death, Maria's art form became the standard to which all other San Ildefonso artisans strived. Her excellent artistry and her delightful personality made her a celebrity and paved the way for all Pueblo potters in the global art world. The size of this pot is 10 1/4" diameter.
