E644 - Plains Men's Personal Smoking Pipe

Plains Catlinite Pipe CA 1890. The Plains Indians made pipes both for personal and/or ceremonial use. Pipe smoking has always been considered a spiritual and sacred experience to Native Americans. They believe that smoking assisted in protection from enemies, gain in village achievement, and they believed that it envokes blessings to supernatural powers on anything. Native American men smoked tobacco when they could, it was not always readily available. Because they were in short supply, they were conserved for ceremonial occasions. This pipe is made from catlinite with a hardwood stem (probably made from ash or sumac). The pipe is 2 3/8" long and 3" high. The stem is 16 1/2" long.
