HOPI HAND MADE MELON POT - SC142
View Details
By Hopi artist, Alton Komalestewa. Hand formed vase using the coil method. Pots created in this traditional style are hand coiled, hand polished, hand slipped and hand fired. The pottery of Alton Komalestewa was influenced by his former mother-in-law, Helen Shupla of Santa Clara. Hence it has the look of Santa Clara pottery known for it's unique, almost metallic, finish in black and red. This process is achieved by a high polish and in the firing technique using cattle or sheep manure to oxidize the slip and create the colour. The "melon" shape is achieved by hand, forming the vertical scallops. Approximately 5 1/2 inches high and 8 inches wide. ONE ONLY
