Hopi Kachina Sifter Basket - BA921

This is a Hopi Sifter Basket made by weaver Dorleen Gawasheseoma-Lalo. This basket features a corn kachina figure in the center. It takes skill and practice to make a sifter basket with pictorial designs as most are made in simple diamond designs. The Hopi people and a few Pueblo tribes weave Plaited baskets (meaning the warp and weft are constantly laid one over the other). These baskets as the name implies were utilitarian tools used to sift corn and other collected plants: all the impurities are sifted out through its open woven design. This basket is made from sun bleached yucca as well as commercially dyed green yucca. Made in the USA. This one of a kind basket measures 5" inches in depth and is 16" inches wide.
