View Details Lipan Apache Moccasins CA 1875 Pair of Lipan Apache moccasins of Native tanned buckskin with hide soles Soles are sinew sewn inside out to one piece upper with the outside seam at the back. A long "V" shape is cut out of the upper and resewn together. The tongue extends from the upper in one piece and is folded over and held with a buckskin thong that is wrapped around the ankle of the moccasin, punched through toward the back of the moccasin to hold it at the heel, then punched through again at either side of the tongue and tied.The beaded design is done in the "lazy stitch" technique with small beads and features two white bands one on top of the other with occasional rectangular coloured bands. The coloured band at the toes depicts a cross in translucent red within a green field bordered with translucent red at each side. This design is repeated at either side back from the toe with a band above of translucent grape with the side edges bordered in green. This double band design repeats again toward the back of the heel. Another double band appears at the side of the moccasin but the lower band in this instance is a solid rectangle of translucent gold bordered on all sides in green. The buckskin of the uppers is painted over all with yellow ochre. The triangle cut outs are painted red. A faint but recognizable design of double red lines extends down the outer side of each moccasin. An even fainter green design can be discerned outlining the beaded band with occasional green crosses painted above. Green and red pigment can be seen at the backs and on the upper edges of the moccasins, but what designs these were I can not make out. There is minor bead loss at both toes and the left heel.
