This basket is woven in a unique design with two Yeis, navajo dieties, surrounding the traditional wedding basket design center. by Navajo artist Elsie Holiday. This basket is unusual in the use of a twined technique and the addition of turquoise beads sewn onto the edge. Woven today much the same as it might have been centuries ago, the tools used are a knife, an awl, and the hands of the weaver. The native materials - largely sumac and willow - are collected soaked, split, and dyed in a process almost as time consuming as the actual weaving. The Navajo and the Paiute both make this type of basket. Navajo basketry, almost a lost art at the beginning of the twentieth century, is now enjoying a come back.These baskets are still constructed for utilitarian and ceremonial purposes, but have also evolved into a unique and beautiful art form.
