NAVAJO GERMANTOWN SECOND PHASE CHIEFS BLANKET - A1256

Germantown Chief's Blanket CA 1880 Navajo Germantown 2nd phase chief's blanket variant woven entirely of 4-ply Germantown yarn. Germantown yarn was a commercially spun and dyed yarn manufactured in Germantown, Pennsylvania which became available to the Navajo weaver in 1865 in a three-ply yarn and by the mid 1870's in a four-ply yarn. By 1875 the four-ply yarn had all but replaced the earlier three-ply yarn in Navajo weavings. The use of Germantown yarns by the Navajo was ended for the most part at the turn of the century. The design of this weaving features crosses in the center and half-crosses at the edges boxed and arranged horizontally in four rows of three; two in the center and two at top and bottom. The cross and box elements are displayed against purple and black striped bands horizontally at the center, top and bottom edges. Black and white stripes make the background. The colours are black, white, red, and two shades of purple. There are four broken warps at the bottom edge. This weaving measures approximately 57 1/4 inches wide by 47 1/4 inches long.
