NAVAJO HAND WOVEN BASKET - BA155
View Details
Navajo Basketry Tray By Navajo artist, Alicia Nelson. An extremely detailed pictorial design including buffalo and eagle heads, and geometrics. Woven today much the same as it might have been centuries ago, the tools used are a knife, an awl, and the hands of the weaver. The native materials - largely sumac and willow - are collected soaked, split, and dyed in a process almost as time consuming as the actual weaving. Navajo basketry, almost a lost art at the beginning of the twentieth century, is now enjoying a come back. These baskets are still constructed for utilitarian and ceremonial purposes, but have also evolved into a unique and beautiful art form. 11 inches in diameter
