NAVAJO PICTORIAL BASKET - BA151

View Details
This Navajo basket int the style of pre-1930 Apache basketry shows incredible skill and artistry by the weaver Rose Esplain. The design incorporates stars, human and animal figures, whirling logs, and coyote tracks in both positive and negative. Woven today much the same as it might have been centuries ago, the tools used are a knife, an awl, and the hands of the weaver. The native materials - largely sumac and willow - are collected soaked, split, and dyed in a process almost as time consuming as the actual weaving. Navajo basketry, almost a lost art at the beginning of the twentieth century, is now enjoying a come back. These baskets are still constructed for utilitarian and ceremonial purposes, but have also evolved into a unique and beautiful art form. Approximately 25 1/2 inches in diameter.
