View Details
Navajo Germantown "Serape Style" pictorial. Three-ply Germantown wool yarn. Germantown yarn was a commercially spun and dyed yarn manufactured in Germantown, Pennsylvania that became available to the Navajo weaver in 1865 in a three-ply yarn and by the mid 1870's in a four-ply yarn. By 1875 the four-ply yarn had all but replaced the earlier three-ply yarn in Navajo weavings. The use of Germantown yarns by the Navajo was ended for the most part at the turn of the century. A heavy Saltillo influence can be seen here in the detailed design of this rug, especially in the colour gradations of the center vertical line and side edges and also in the rows of serrated, outlined diamonds. Two vertical rows of three large, outlined, serrated diamonds create the main visual design of this rug, but the skill and imagination of this weaver becomes apparent upon closer inspection of the fine details of the pattern. The weaver has used slight gradations in colour not only in the center and outer stripes but also in the mid serrates of the diamond figures to create a subtle and intriguing overall effect. The observer is compelled by these subtleties to look more closely, then to discover the varied and detailed pictorials that are suddenly everywhere. Bows and arrows, a variety of birds, moths and butterflies, and - in opposite corners - two weaving combs, symbols to suggest the human hands and tools that created the weaving. The colours used are red, orange, yellow, dark red, peach, light and dark pink, light and dark purple, dark green, turquoise, light and dark blue, olive, and white. The weaving measures approximately 56 1/2 inches wide by 75 3/4 inches long. ONE ONLY! Please reference Sku # 998081251
