PANAMA INDIAN HANDMADE WOUNAAN BASKET - BA168
View Details
The Wounaan people have struggled recently but the discovery of their beautiful basketry by the world's art community has revitalized the economy of the villages. These baskets, exquisitely woven by hand rival the work of any contemporary or ancient society. Made of palm fibers and natural dyes, motifs generally represent the world in which the Wounaan live including jungle birds, butterflies and other Native flora and fauna. This basket features a butterfly design and was woven by Wounaan artist Leybis Chercarama. It has 41 stitches per inch, 255 stitches per square inch for a total of 75,500 stitches and represents 420 hours or work. A photograph of the weaver accompanies the basket when sold.
