SIOUX BEADED POSSIBLE BAG - AW683
View Details
Sioux Possible Bag CA 1880 Sioux possible bag of Native tanned buckskin folded to allow for front flap and sewn up either side. Three buckskin thongs punched through the top front of the bag and the edge of the flap to secure the bag. Beaded panel on the front is roughly trapezoidal and executed in the "lazy stitch" technique. Three identical design elements to be appreciated either vertically or horizontally consist of a center box of cobalt blue outline within which are "rainbow" bars of red white-hearts at the outer edge, greasy yellow on the inside and green with a white center in the middle. At either edge are stepped, outlined triangles with a base of orange bordered with cobalt blue rectangles with metal bead centers. The main field surrounding the inner element is green with a red white-heart outline with a field of white separating the outer edge from a stepped cobalt blue border with a heart of white in each right triangle giving the outer border a lacy look. The design elements at the bottom third of the bag are slightly larger than at the top, adding weight to the base of the bag. The seam sides are beaded in vertical bands with two outlined boxes making up the focal point with greasy yellow centers, light blue mid-field and red white-heart borders. The boxes are separated by a white field and two cobalt blue bands with enclosed white terminals. A band of white extends from either end of the design to the top and bottom of the bag. A short band of bead design decorates the flap with a white background against which is set an alternating design of stepped triangles and outlined rectangles; the triangles with red white-heart centers surrounded by greasy yellow and outlined in cobalt blue; the rectangles in green outlined with red white-hearts. Decorative tin cone and aniline dyed horsehair tufts were attached originally in four vertical rows of two each on either side of the side beaded panels on small buckskin thongs that have been punched through the hide with an awl. At some point whether by a Native owner or later collector, the tin cone decorations were removed from the back side of the bag. The bag is 19 inches wide and 13 1/2 inches tall.
