View Details Sioux Woman's Leggings and Moccasins CA 1880 Pair of Sioux woman's leggings and moccasins. The moccasins are of Native tanned buckskin with rawhide soles sewn with the seam inside. The leggings are of Native tanned buck or elk hide with canvas tops sewn around the top edge. The beaded design of the moccasins are done in the "lazy stitch" technique. The design of the moccasins occurs against a white background. Rows of beading follow the upper edge of the sole with intermittent stepped outlined triangle "tipi" designs with green centers outlined in greasy yellow and red white-hearts. A strip of beading extends from the tongue to the toe in the same design. The remaining field is filled in with green beading to create the "buffalo track. The leggings were probably not made to "match" the moccasins based on the fact that there is no cobalt blue used in the moccasins. Moccasins and leggings, however, were not always made in "matching pairs". The design of the leggings is done in a horizontal "lazy stitch" technique on the front to the side band which is beaded vertically. The main design is comprised of two cobalt blue triangles nearly joined at the point with green "K" elements at each base and the whole outlined in red white-hearts. A horizontal bar of red white-hearts with four pronged fork terminals at either end intersects between the points of the triangles. Between these are green diamonds with greasy yellow windows. The diamonds are outlined in red white-hearts that extend at the top and bottom points into bifurcated "K"s. Another fork begins between the prongs of the first. a line extends up from the forks of these. The vertically beaded side panels are designed also with a white background in a design of repeating "K" elements alternating red white-hearts and green with three white rectangles in the center of each triangle. These are separated back to back by crosses, the arms of each beaded in one line of red white-hearts and one lone of green. Two lines extend horizontally from the tip of each triangle in the "K" element, pointing toward eachother. A green band borders the bottom of the leggings beneath which are design highlights of cobalt blue lines designed in an elongated horizontal "H". All of the undecorated bucksking is rubbed with yellow and green ochre except on the front top edge. The moccasins with the leggings stand approximately 19 inches tall.
