San Juan Paiute Basket - BA926

This is a San Juan Paiute Basket woven by artist Marylou Boone. The San Juan Paiute people produce a wide variety of baskets. Back around the 19th century, when Navajo Ceremonial baskets began to fade away, the Paiute people would weave them. Most Antique Navajo Baskets have a possibility that they were once woven by the Paiute people. The baskets that were unique to this tribe were conical baskets and seed jar styles, showing that they were mostly nomadic. This basket features 8 birds along with some Cacti toward the center. The colorations, except the sun bleached yucca, are comercially dyed. Made in the USA. This basket measures 10" inches across and has a 1 1/2 inch depth. ONE ONLY!
