Sandpainting Pictorial Rug - A1565

Sandpainting Pictorial Rug - A1565
This is a Navajo Handwoven Sandpainting Rug by an unknown weaver. The rug has two stylistic features (mainly falls into the catagory of a pictorial as well as a Sandpainting). This pattern has been adopted from an actual sandpainting and is very similiar to the well known "Shiprock Yei" rugs. The rug depicts 7 parrallel arrows and 7 corn stalks; one of the arrows surrounds the rest of the picotorial figures and is consider to be the guardian or protector arrow. This rug is dated CA 1940, it is predominately made out of natural and vegetal dyed sheep wool but does has some aniline (red) dyed wool as well. This uncommon rug measures 39 x 63.
