TOHONO O'ODHAM HAND WOVEN BASKET - BA161

View Details
Tohono O'odham Basketry Tray By Tohono O'odham - formerly called Papago - artist Marion Cruz. This basket is woven in a 6-point star design using black and green. Woven today much the same as it might have been centuries ago, the tools used are a knife, an awl, and the hands of the weaver. The native materials - Bear Grass with its razor sharp leaves, sturdy Devil's Claw, and Yucca - are collected soaked and split in a process almost as time consuming as the actual weaving. The Tohono O'odham people stubbornly resisted using the vast influx of manufactured goods availaible at the beginning of the twentieth century to replace their artistic and utilitarian basketry. Their traditions of weaving and design survive largely unchanged in their beautiful and artistic basketry. 14 1/4 inches in diameter.
