Bill and Jean Cousins were traders at the Wide Ruins Trading Post and their influence on the local weavers was pivotal in the design and quality of the Wide Ruins Navajo rugs as we know them today. Using the research in Native vegetal dyes being performed by Nonobah G. Bryan, Cozy McSparron, and Mary Cabot Wheelwright, the Cousins introduced these dyes to their weavers and encouraged their use. The result was the beautiful Wide Ruins rug, a borderless banded design field in lovely vegetal pastels with geometric accents. Wide Ruins Navajo rugs are some of the most beautiful and technically excellent rugs of today
