YAVAPAI APACHE GEOMETRIC TRAY - B964
View Details
Yavapai Apache Geometric Tray CA 1880 Yavapai geometric tray woven of willow and devil's claw. These earlier, finely woven Apache trays were made most often for Apache consumption as gifts or for ceremony. Later toward the beginning of the 20th century many baskets were made for trade at the posts and along the railroad stops. The design features interlocking bands outlined in steps curve toward each other from the black center, widening toward the edge, creating three outlined five point stars. These baskets were made then much as they are today using a knife, an awl, and the weaver's skill. There are few Apache basketmekers today. Being made of organic material, as was most Native American material, few examples remain. Loss of one to two stitches in several areas, especially near the back center and outer edges. The basket measures approximately 19 inches in diameter.
