Product Information

Apache Beaded Hide Sunrise Dress. CA 1930.
This beautiful Apache Sunrise Dress is from the 1930’s Era. It was commonly worn when a young girl would go through a four day ceremony in which she would leave her childhood behind and becomes a woman. She would become a living representation of White painted women, the mother of the Apache people. This dress is made from two whole buckskins which have been brain tanned and painted with yellow and red ochre; one piece being the shirt or poncho and the bottom piece being the skirt. The dress has different designs hand-beaded with glass beads. The dress is made from combination of hand and machine sewing with a cotton thread. There are a total of twelve silver colored buttons as well as several handmade tin cone shaped jingles which hang from individual hand cut fringes. The shirt measures 28" x 28" and the skirt measures 38" in length. CA 1930. One of a kind.
