Product Information

B1296 - Large Apache Lidded Pictorial Olla
Large Western Apache lidded olla basket woven using the three-rod bundling formation. Split willow is used for the tan color and split devil’s claw for design. There is some red in the design which is split yucca root.
This is a utilitarian basket which dates about 1875-1880. Some of the
first baskets woven with human figures and quadrupeds. This basket has
both. The lid has quite a few coyote tracks. Typical design for the period featured, zig-zag patterns, crosses and traditional Western Apache dark
center design. This basket was made for use, not for sale to tourists. Good condition with some stitch loss. The size is rare, 29" tall and 28" diameter, especially for one that survived because these baskets were used
for storage. Basket includes lid with central star motif.
